Studies of Some Problems in Nonparametric Inference

چکیده
The as~totic behavior of same nonpa~etric test criteria used in analysis of variance (one-'WaY and two-'WaY classification) under the Pitman type of alternative is considered. Step-down procedure is suggested for bivariate location parameter problem. Waldt s test is used for testing hypotheses in the categorical setup. • • • 1i ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to express my sincere tharu~s to Professor S N Roy, who as my research adviser suggested the problems in this thesis and gave constant encouragement and guidance throughout the worki and to Professor Harold Hotelling and Professor Wassily Hoeffding, who read the manuscript and offered many helpful suggestions • I would also lilte to express my grateful appreciation to Dr. P. K. Bhattacharya and Dr. Richard Potthoff for many encouraging discussions during the course of this work.

There are situations in medical studies, wherein it is impossible to use the methods based on normal distribution (parametric methods). This paper objects to introduce common nonparametric methods and the inferences based on the methods in medical studies. Principles and method of calculations along with the software codes for common nonparametric methods and inference based on them were presen...
متن کاملBayesian Nonparametric Inference - Why and How.
We review inference under models with nonparametric Bayesian (BNP) priors. The discussion follows a set of examples for some common inference problems. The examples are chosen to highlight problems that are challenging for standard parametric inference. We discuss inference for density estimation, clustering, regression and for mixed effects models with random effects distributions. While we fo...
متن کاملSequential design for nonparametric inference
Performance of nonparametric function estimates often depends on the choice of design points. Based on the mean integrated squared error criterion, we propose a sequential design procedure that updates model knowledge and optimal design density sequentially. The methodology is developed under a general framework covering a wide range of nonparametric inference problems, such as conditional mean...
متن کاملMinimax and Adaptive Inference in Nonparametric Function Estimation
Since Stein’s 1956 seminal paper, shrinkage has played a fundamental role in both parametric and nonparametric inference. This article discusses minimaxity and adaptive minimaxity in nonparametric function estimation. Three interrelated problems, function estimation under global integrated squared error, estimation under pointwise squared error, and nonparametric confidence intervals, are consi...
متن کاملSOME THEORY AND PRACTICE OF STATISTICS by Howard G. Tucker CHAPTER 10. NONPARAMETRIC STATISTICAL INFERENCE
10.1 The Chi-square Goodness of Fit Test. The general area of nonparametric statistical inference deals with statistical procedures such as hypothesis testing, point estimation and confidence intervals in problems where the parent distribution has no known functional form. For one reason or another, the chi-square goodness of fit test is considered to be in this area, and so we present it here....
